Yin Yoga stretches the body from the inside out. The focus of practice is on the deeper layers, with the intention of “juicing up” connective tissue that holds body structures together – from our joints to the internal organs. With regular practice, Yin Yoga often creates more space in the body, a feeling of lightness, and more fluidity in daily movement. These poses also stretch the meridian system that runs through the connective tissue, helping to release any energetic blocks. It is common to feel quietly energized by the end of class. Poses are typically held three to five minutes with variations available to meet individual needs.
Each class in this series will focus on one set of meridians: (1) kidney & urinary bladder, (2) liver & gall bladder, and (3) stomach & spleen. The shapes of the poses will be familiar; however, their names are different to distinguish them from Hatha Yoga poses. We will also use Energy Medicine Yoga® techniques to support meridian flow and Somatic Flexibility Stretches to work with the stretch reflex receptors that impact muscular range of motion.
